	*TAPE STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS AND PROCEDURES* STORE TAPE AT RECOMMENDED TEMPERATURES AND HUMIDITY Because tapes can expand and contract, stay away from sudden temperature changes, even within the recommended range. Cassette tapes should be stored within 59 degrees and 77 degrees and 40% to 60% humidity. KEEP TAPE EVENLY WOUND Look at the cassette tape and notice if there is “stepping” or other signs of uneven winding - if there is, the whole tape should be rewound and, if possible, rewind at slow speeds. Prior to using the cassette, loosen the tape by gently slapping the shell against the palm of your hand - with side A of the cassette up. STORE TAPES UPRIGHT AND IN CASES Stacking cassettes one on top of the other can warp their shells. Always store cassette tapes upright - on their sides or ends. PUT LABELS ON CORRECTLY Put labels only where they belong. If possible, do not put new labels on over old. Improperly placed labels can interfere with cassette loading, degrading the cassette alignment and even peel off inside the tape transport mechanism. REWIND OR FORWARD TAPE EVERY THREE YEARS Exercise tapes at least every three years so that the tape layers do not start to stick together. STAY AWAY FROM STRAY MAGNETIC FIELDS Tapes are recorded by magnetic fields - they can also get erased - so keep tapes away from loudspeakers, electric motors and other magnetic sources. ACCLIMATE TAPE TO ROOM CONDITIONS Whenever possible, give tape 24 Hours to adjust to climate changes prior to using.

The answer to the question of how long will tape last is one of storage conditions. If the user adheres to the guidelines above, tape should last 15 years without significant degradation. Because most of us do not occupy such ideal temperature and humidity controlled environments, 15 years might be a bit unrealistic. Therefore, for irreplaceable tapes it is recommended that “protection copies” be made every three to five years. PURCHASING AND USING CHEAPER CASSETTES: Cheaper cassettes are just that - cheaper. They are manufactured and assembled from lower quality products and are not reliable to be used and cycled repeatedly. Inexpensive tape’s inherent unreliability make it poorly suited for archiving purposes, as the tape may stick, or the glue (binder) that holds the oxide in place may fail and flake off causing drop out and loss. Your recorder runs at slower speeds than standard recorders and “bargain or cheaper tape” characteristically does not run as smoothly in the recorder as higher quality tapes, and infrequently they can and do jam during recording. Remember the *overall performance* of your recorder depends on using the best possible tape available.
